The Robberg Nature Reserve is located in Plettenberg Bay along the Garden Route in the Western Cape. This reserve based around the stunning Robberg Peninsula is relatively small in size but makes up with its biodiversity and is rich in fauna and flora. Variety of small mammals and bird species makes this reserve a favourite among bird watchers and nature lovers alike.
Hiking routes and nature walks along the peninsula will give you breathtaking views over the rugged coastline and pristine landscape. Whales, cape fur seals and the occasional great white shark can be seen from shore in this marine protected area. Southern right whales are a common site and can be observed in the reserve waters and along the shores from June to November, when they visit the area during their breeding and calving season. There are three viewing decks with picnic facilities and water points for day visitors to enjoy and make the most of their day out.
Swimming, snorkelling and diving are allowed but you should stay aware of rocks and dangerous currents which are a common occurrence. Being a protected marine reserve only rock and surf angling are allowed, no bait collecting. Spearfishing and fishing from boats are also not allowed in the reserve. Fishing permits are required and proof might be requested upon arrival and can be obtained from any post office.
The Robberg Nature Reserve has a stunning and very special overnight accommodation called the Fountain Shack, with stunning views over the Robberg Peninsula and Indian Ocean. This house is rented to only one group at a time and cannot be reached by car, everything you will need for your time spent there you will need to carry with you on the approximately 2km hike from the parking area. If you plan to overnight at the Fountain Shack you will require a certain level of fitness as the route can be tough as you need to carry everything you would need from wood, food and water with you for your overnight stay.
