Pilanesberg National Park is located in the North West province in South Africa and is the fourth largest wildlife reserve in South Africa. The park is in a malaria-free area and a short drive from some of the biggest cities in South Africa namely Johannesburg and Pretoria, making it popular with both tourists and locals looking to escape the city lights.
Set in a volcanic crater which erupted millions of years ago, the park with its stunning landscapes are rich in wildlife which includes the Big 5. The Mankwe Dam is the largest body of water in the game reserve and many animals large and small are attracted to this water source and grasslands surrounding it.
Some of the most popular attractions in the park would have to be the game drives, safari walks, elephant interaction and hot air balloon rides over the scenic landscapes giving you a birds eye view over the remarkable landscapes and wildlife. Large variety of accommodation options to suit the needs of everyone, from camping and safari tents to luxury lodges and hotels.
The park is great for game viewing all year round, with dry season being in the colder winter months (April to October) and rainy season in the warmer summer months (September to March). Wildlife shelters and bird hides are located throughout the park and makes for some great game viewing and terrific base for photographers to spend a few hours.
Stone age and iron age preserved sites are found around the Pilanesberg National Park, also the entertainment venue of Sun City Resort and Casino. Sun City is home to the Valley of Waves waterpark, Gary Player designed golf course and one of the highest and longest zip-lines in South Africa.
