Matroosberg Ski and Snowboard

The Matroosberg ski and snowboarding slope is located on a working farm called Erfdeel in the Matroosberg Private Nature Reserve, situated between the towns of Ceres and Touws River in the Western Cape province. During the winter months once the snow has covered this mountainous area you have the opportunity to ski and snowboard on the uncrowded Matroosberg slopes in the Hex River mountains. There are approximately 2km of slopes at an altitude of 2005m (6578ft).

The Ski Club of South Africa established in 1930 is a private ski club that has been skiing on the Matroosberg since 1935. You can become a member of the South Africa Ski Club which will grant you access and allow you to use the ski lifts. These ski lifts are not available to non-members as you require a safety harness attachment used to connect to the ski lift, which is only supplied to members.

During the winter months skiing and snowboarding is dependent on snowfall as there are no snowmaking machines and thus have to rely on mother nature to supply the snow. Certain times of the year the conditions are also perfect for ice climbing for the more experienced and those with their own ice climbing gear. No equipment hire available so you should have your own equipment. To avoid disappointment it is best to keep an eye on their social media accounts to get an update in regards to snowfall and slope access.

There are a variety of additional activities located in the area such as hiking, mountain biking, abseiling, fishing and many 4×4 routes for the off road enthusiast. Variety of accommodation such as lakeside houses and the Ski Hut which is great for those winter months sitting in front of the stone built fireplace.
