Ski and Snow

Africa with its desert landscapes, bush and wildlife safaris are not usually the first place that comes to mind if you are considering going on a skiing or snowboarding holiday. There are various ski resorts mostly scattered in northern Africa around the Atlas Mountains, and in Southern Africa located in the South African Drakensberg mountains and Lesotho Maluti Mountains.

Morocco and Algeria which have some of the biggest ski resorts are best visited between the months of December to March. South Africa and Lesotho in southern Africa best visited between June to August. Snowfall can sometimes be limited but most of the ski resorts do have snow making machines to ensure you get the most of your snow and ski getaway.

Morocco you will find places such as Oukaimeden about 80km outside Marrakech and Ifrane with its beautiful forests in the Atlas Mountains, offering great ski resorts and facilities. Algeria offers ski resorts in the Chrea National Park located in the mountainous region known as the Blidean Atlas, the Djurdjura National Park also offers ski resorts throughout the winter months.

Lesotho also known as the “Kingdom in the sky” because of its snowy mountain peaks is home to Africa’s highest ski resort located in the Maluti Mountains. Sort drive from the South African border makes this an ideal getaway if you are in search of a skiing or snowboarding holiday. South Africa also offers slopes and a ski resort in the southern Drakensberg mountain range.
