The Cathedral Peak Hike is not for the faint-heated. Walking step by step on a small trail you will experience freedom along with a rush of adrenaline – one step left means a small tumble, one step right means a massive tumble to the valley floor. With the full round trip standing at 22km, we recommend an 8/10 level fitness or seasoned hikers only.
Besides a high level of fitness, you will also need a full day (10-12 hours) for the Cathedral Peak Hike in the Drakensberg. The peak rises to 3005 meters above sea level with your legs lifting you 1500 meters during the first 11km of hike itself. Yet the most challenging part of this hike is the last climb up to the peak itself with a few “scrambling sections” which will seem like proper rock climbing. Before the very last traverse is a steel chain hanging ladder leading as well.
There are many routes to pick for the first half to the Peak and back, most starting and finishing at the Cathedral Peak Hotel. This is definitely no walk in the park, however, many incredible 360 degree views await you on this hike as you walk, climb and conquer this hike in the Drakensberg Mountians.
