Tiffindell Ski Resort

Tiffindell Ski Resort is the highest ski resort in South Africa, located outside the small town of Rhodes in the southern Drakensberg mountain range. This alpine resort opened in 1993 and sits on the slopes off Ben McDhui, the highest mountain peak in the Eastern Cape province at 3001m (9846ft) above sea level. Tiffindell Ski Resort was awarded and rated number 19 on CNN’s “Top 100 Ski Runs of the world” in 2014.

The best time to visit for skiing and snowboarding is during the winter months of June, July and August. Snowfall can not always be guaranteed however for these times the resort does have their own state of the art snow making machines, ensuring snow covered slopes creating a winter wonderland. There are 5 ski lifts and 2.4km of slopes suitable for beginners and intermediate skiers and snowboarders looking for a fun day out on the slopes or to improve their skills, the ski slopes are situated at an elevation of between 2700m (8858ft) and 2930m (9613ft).

The Tiffindell Resort offers various activities for the outdoor enthusiast all year round. During the warmer summer months activities include high altitude hiking, mountain biking, mountain boarding and fly fishing. The “8 Passes” off road and 4×4 route is sure to challenge motorcyclists and 4×4 enthusiasts. The beautiful landscapes surrounding the resort are well known worldwide for its alpine flowers, stunning views and rare bird species.

This ski resort has the highest pub in South Africa called the “Ice Station 2720”, you can also head over to Yeti’s Retreat Pub to enjoy a drink after a long day on the slopes or to just enjoy the magnificent sunset views. There is a ski school for beginners or for those wanting to improve their current skills, ski and snowboarding equipment is available for hire at a daily rate or included in tailor made packages.

There are a variety of accommodation options which includes chalets, mountain suits and luxury self catering accommodation. If you find yourself in the area or staying close by at one of the many accommodation options around the area day visitors are permitted.
