Moremi Game Reserve is located in northern Botswana in the Okavango Delta, which is named after Chief Moremi of the Batawana tribe. Okavango Delta is the largest inland delta with seasonal floods usually between March and June. The environment and wildlife was under threat until the local Batawana people stepped in and proclaimed the area Moremi Game Reserve in 1963, making this reserve the oldest and first protected area in the Okavango Delta.
Moremi Game Reserve is best visited during the dry season and best time for game viewing is from July to October. Within its boundaries the reserve contains approximately twenty percent of the Okavango Delta, David Livingston passed through the area 100 years ago he called it the “country full of rivers”. The flood is at its peak during Botswana’s winter months when the delta swells to approximately three times its usual size, attracting wildlife from miles around creating one of Africa’s greatest concentrations of animals.
The town of Maun is a great starting point and strongly recommend a 4×4 vehicle if you are planning to explore the park. Malaria is also a risk and anti malaria medication is also recommended. The many waterways like the Xakanaxa lagoon can be navigated by dugout canoes and boat cruises which makes for fantastic game viewing and great experience drifting past hippo’s, crocodiles and many animals on the shores which includes the Big 5.
Many safari camps spread throughout the reserve with some based around the large Chief’s Island and the Mapane Tongue Peninsula. Some of the popular campsites are South Gate, Third Bridge and another campsite located at Xakanaxa Lediba on a narrow strip of land where you will be surrounded by water and marsh. Please note that it is possible for wild animals to access these campsites so care must be taken at night when most predators are out on the hunt.
