The Brandwag Buttress Trail is a 2.4km lightly trafficked out and back trail in the Golden Gate Highlands National Park. Brandwag Buttress which means “Sentinel” in the Afrikaans language, representing the sandstone cliffs golden glow best seen at sunrise or sunset – hence the name Golden Gate.
The majority of the hike is easy with exception of the final stretch with its rocky outcrop, although there is a fixed chain to help you with this stretch. The trail is relatively short but very very scenic and has a unique geology. The hike does not reach the top of the buttress, but allows the hikers to see the breathtaking scenery and geology.
The hike starts from the Glen Reenen Rest Camp taking roughly an hour to complete. There is however a shorter second route from the Golden Gate Hotel approaching the Brandwag Buttress from the west. This shorter route however lacks the views and sandstone overhangs off the main route.
